You can picture it now: No more schlepping in groceries in the rain while trying to balance an umbrella. Someplace to store the lawn mower besides that backyard shed. Enough space to fit those tubs of holiday decorations or workout gear, like that treadmill taking up a corner of the bedroom…
Yep, you’ve got some serious garage envy, and you’re considering re-building or constructing an attached garage.
If your home was built without a garage, or if your garage has become dedicated for storage purposes, there are a few options you can consider when you want to add a garage onto your home.
Attached Garages
You could do an addition where you expand your existing home to have the new garage attached to the house. The attached garages are build-out attachments that connect the existing home with the garage. You do need sufficient space to do the build-out without encroaching on your neighbour’s property.
Some people opt to do the build-out on one side of the home. This makes sense if you have room to expand on either side. If not, another option is to build out the garage in front of the home on one side.
Ideally, if you are adding an attached garage, you will want it connected to your kitchen, laundry room, or main entrance hallway. You would not want your build-out to connect to a bedroom or living room.
Detached Garages
Your other option for adding a garage onto your home is to build a detached garage. The Garage is independent of your home and is built in a separate location on your property. It can be built fairly close to the home or further away, depending on the size of the property.
One benefit of detached garages is they can be built anywhere you have space. They are not contingent on having enough room to add the garage to the home since it can be located in proximity to your house.
Additionally, building a detached garage is the perfect solution for homes with existing attached garages when you want to reclaim space for parking your cars and move everything you store into the new detached garage.
Some people also build a detached garage for storing their camper, RV, or boat to protect it from the elements.
Garages Offer More Than Just Parking and Storage
Do you enjoy a hobby that requires various tools, supplies, and other equipment? Converting part of your garage space into a dedicated workshop is a great solution. Some people use part of the space as their arts and crafts room. Families may allocate part of their garage as a family game room, kids’ playroom, or teen hangout.
